Objectives

The English Debating Team at BLMCSS aims to broaden students understanding of argumentation and the English language while providing an opportunity to increase their confidence and perseverance by stepping outside their comfort zone.

Overview

This year and last has witnessed the birth of our new debating club at BLMCSS.  After reviewing the numerous debating organizations, formats, and events on offer throughout Hong Kong, we decided to join the Hong Kong Secondary School Debating Competition which is the largest of its kind in Asia, encompassing more than 120 local and international participating schools.

With more than 5 debates already completed and two more scheduled for the end of this year, the students have put their considerable skills to the test winning two-thirds of all debates thus far. 

Feedback from the judges has also been both comprehensive and rewarding. Through extensive feedback from the judges and extra-curricular coaching, students have learned how to formulate and refine arguments and counter arguments, present and adhere to a team-line, and defend a position with judicious and carefully chosen examples. Overall, the feedback has been very positive which is testament to the student's hard-work and determination over the past two years.

BLMCSS is immensely proud of the student’s commitment, enthusiasm, and success in their debating performances. It is a daunting task to argue a point when all eyes are upon you and in this regard students have maintained their composure and handled themselves with grace when they win and determination and positivity when they don't. We couldn't be more proud!
